Ramadan is the most holy and sacred time of year for followers of the Islamic religion. It is a joyful celebration, where Muslims dedicate themselves for a month to fasting and praying, creating a deeper awareness of and closeness to God (Allah).
Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar, is the Islamic month of fasting. During Ramadan, participating Muslims refrain from eating, drinking and sexual activities from dawn until sunset. Fasting is intended to teach Muslims patience, humility and spirituality.
Muslims believe Ramadan to be the month in which the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed to the Islamic Prophet Muhammed.
Ramadan is a time of reflecting, believing and worshipping God. Muslims are expected to put more effort into following the teachings of Islam and to avoid obscene and irreligious sights and sounds.
In honour of Ramadan, which starts today this year – 11th August, 2010, I am showcasing some outstanding works of art celebrating this Islamic Holy month.
Please note: Not all of this art represents this year, which is 1431 in the Islamic calendar.
